Collage of the Month: DUMBO Arts Festival

DumboArtsFestival Collage

DUMBO Arts Festival is a free public event for three days–Friday through Sunday, and attracts over 200,000 visitors. My friends and I headed last Saturday on the “F” train to Brooklyn along with these thousands of other visitors, to attend this event. The first thing you’ll experience is the spectacular and iconic view of both bridges–Manhattan and Brooklyn! The festival has many trunk fashion pop-ups, street paintings, jewelry, food vendors, art statues, dancing performances, sculptures, art studios and stages throughout the neighborhood and in the park! I especially liked the “Little Poland” art gallery and immediately thought about my dad, who’s from Poland. Inside the gallery was an array of art from print work, sculpture, wood carvings to Polish jewelry and pottery. I even got to meet and talk with a talented artist, Ewa Budka.

Next stop–Paris Fashion Week!

After waiting over six years, I finally had the chance to meet my idol, Christian Siriano…”Project Runway” 2008 Season 4 youngest-ever winner. He has been my inspiration!

This month, Siriano launched a new women’s perfume, “Silhouette”, at his NY Fashion Week pop-up boutique in Meatpacking. Amidst all the guests and staff, champagne was passed around and, of course, I enjoyed my sparkling water while they snapped silhouette photos of me in humorous and fun ways. Siriano and I struck up a conversation about his collection and perfume and I was doing my best to be calm, composed and graceful while my knees and hands quivered. All the while, he was welcoming, friendly and engaging. He told me his inspiration for the unusual shape of the “Silhouette” bottle was the twisted, pleated gown throughout his collection.

“Fragrance is an item that lasts a really long time, and I wanted it to be something that was signature to my brand and my world that could last 50 years,” …“We’re about dressing all types of women, and I wanted the fragrance to feel the same way. Even down to the name, Silhouette, we wanted it to feel like it could be for every woman—she can be any size, any age, any shape, and it’s all about celebrating the silhouette of a woman.” –Christian Siriano–

I got to spend my day walking to the Highline this nice chilly afternoon. Sunset was gorgeous!

London Fashion Week…House of Holland’s collection was inspired by the 1970’s rock legends … are you ready for the order of Jimi Hendrix! All the retro florals and fringe with pops of bright spring colors are captivating.

Fierce!  Loved Christian Siriano’s collection and it was inspired by the glass sculptures of Sergio Redegalli and Tara Donovan’s crystal sculptures with aquatic hues!

So many magical moments!  Monique’s collection was inspired by a few moments of sunrise… the instantaneous changes and patterns of light that paint the sky with delicate shades of pastel.  Soft, feminine, and luminous!  The purple gown is my favorite!

Couture Fashion NY Week SS15

This is the time for fashion designers to present and showcase their artistic statement in front of buyers and the press about upcoming trends and style. It is a week-long affair of runway shows, galas and exhibits throughout NYC. This was my second chance to be front row and center at Couture Fashion Week and I attended the Crowne Plaza Times Square Manhattan showing last night with designers from USA, Russia, Lebanon and Vietnam. Representing the U.S. was designer, Evelyn Suzette Johnson, whose “retro” silhouettes and 60’s styles were the inspiration. Russia’s Narine Tovmasyan presented her “Live for the Beauty” collection inspired by the Renaissance and blended to modern age. Martha Fadel, presented her Middle East ensemble of sequin, sheer and metallic fabrics. The final designer, Vo Viet Chung, presented his collection “Cochinchina’s Beauty” made of the traditional Vietnamese silk fabric called “Lanh My A”. He won the prestigious United Nations “UNESCO” award for preserving the art of making this silk. I selected my favorite photos from the show to share with you. I hope you will enjoy them —

Fashion Week is the biggest, the best, the foremost celebrated worldwide event and New York’s Fashion Week takes place every February and September. And this week, NY welcomes and introduces the Spring/Summer 2015 collection (SS15). It is a huge and exciting week for the runway shows, designers, casting models, makeup artists, hairstylists, photographers, and the hundreds of student volunteers working backstage, tirelessly and with energy and spirit. I had the opportunity and privilege to be assigned with other FIT volunteers, to the renowned Milk Studios, to work with Houghton and designer, Katharine Polk. This is a fashion student’s objective, as part of the learning process, and a real eye-opener to the world of fashion.

I arrived promptly at 7am, dressed entirely in black attire from head-to-toe, stylish and comfortable, with a tiny black fanny pack. The black attire made us invisible as we worked and assisted everyone while maintaining and safeguarding the garments and accessories. It was, at times, chaotic and frenzied working side-by-side to dress models, apply makeup or style hair, steam or alter garments…lots to do in order to meet the deadline for the runway. I was assigned to assist two models, Kate and Cristina. And at the end of the show, there was just as much work organizing, packing, and matching the inventory lists. This was one of the most dynamic times in my life and I will never forget this experience. Thank you so much Houghton, for giving me this opportunity.

Please visit the website at Houghton is “chic, edgy, and luxurious” ready-to-wear designs. Katharine Polk, who is originally from Malibu, stated that her fashion icons, Katharine Hepburn and Bianca Jagger are her inspirations. Polk also designs wedding gowns and accessories for Houghton Bride. Most recently, celebrity Ashlee Simpson wore a Houghton boho-chic gown when she wed Evan Ross over the Labor Day weekend. The gown was stunning!

Joan Rivers

Yesterday, we lost an enduring comedian…a trailblazer whose 50-year career knew no boundaries. She skewered everyone, including herself. She had “incredible stamina”. Thanks for hosting “Fashion Police” and your celebrated trademark Red Carpet interviews that made “Who are you wearing?” … a frequent question. It won’t be the same without you. Joan Rivers was 81. Rest in peace!
